Adaptation B: Design Influence Maps

Goosebumps: There have been many different illustrators for R.L Stines' Goosebumps books. Looking at the design of the covers I noticed that there is no more than about 4 colours being used in each illustration, as well as dark black lines to make it look more like a comic book style.
Scooby-Doo: I never noticed before but the backgrounds of Scooby-Doo use mainly one colour and just uses different tones of each colour to create light and shade. As well as this there are good use of shapes to give it a creepy look.
Even though the exterior of the school will not be the final piece, I decided to look at castles, chateaus, private schools and lunatic asylums (as described in the book) to get some inspiration and also narrow down the era.
Using the description of the school interior as a guide, I searched various images to help me piece together something in my head.

Fantastic Voyage: Influence Maps

For my animation I want the cells to be the complete opposite to what they actually are. They are organic organisms so I want  to make them as less organic as possible, machine like, covered in patterned metal and having mechanisms to show how it works. Much like a minuscule spaceship so it will look very sci-fi.

This map is to help define the shape of my mechanical cells as well as thinking how I could have my own shapes by combining different shapes of bacteria together to create something completely unique.

Looking at crafts and ships from Star Wars, Star Trek and other science fiction films and artwork. Some of these are really similar to the way I visualise my cells and the world around them.

The way I want my mechanical cells to look is metallic, with layers of metal sheets to give them a real industrialised look much like Transformers, Halo, War of the Worlds and other science fiction movies. In terms of the world around I was thinking of having it look like it is actually in space (but obviously its not) so the blues and purples seemed like a good starting point to me.

From Script to Screen - Influence Map for Death

From the start when I decided on my story I knew that I would have to think about a more interesting design for my Death character rather than the typical Grim Reaper look with the black cloak and scythe. I put together an influence map of popular Death personifications from films, tv programmes and similar looking characters. As well as other design from concept art etc.

The idea of Death actually being a spirit like character much like the middle image is quite appealing to me and a possible design choice.

More Influence Maps

I have decided to have my Martian's secret lair to be his spaceship. I think it will give me a big advantage to create a space with strange looking fantastical gadgets and equipment along with strange, unique lighting with luminous colours.

I thought looking at the actual exterior of the design would be a good starting point so I can get a sense of the actual shape represented on the inside.
Looking at different interiors of spaceships mainly at the way lighting is used to brighten the whole area with one or two colours. I also like the image in the top left corner with the pattern on the wall because I was thinking of doing something like this using alchemy symbols and patterns.

Secret Lairs Influence Maps

I decided to do some Influence Maps to help me with specific things and aspects that would be involved in my secret lair of the Martain Alchemist.

I felt looking at the equipment of alchemy in traditional alchemy as well as chemical science from real life and different media would be vital as this is what will define the lair to being an Alchemist's the most.

I decided to look at the actual location of this Martian's lair. Straight away I thought it would be best to situate him in space or another distant planet as you cannot get any more secret than that. I really liked the idea of making it a space station/spaceship within an asteroid field. The face on this map is actually a face discovered on the planet Mars I thought it would put a nice spin on things and give it some real mystery if the face is actually the lair.

The appearance of the character I feel is an important aspect in order to shape the lair. I have been bouncing the two ideas of making the character a gruesome looking alien or actually making him in a human disguise which of course reflects on the character bible. I looked at sci-fi films and programs with aliens in them as well as possible alchemy related attire and appearances.

The Hero Prop - I have had many ideas about a possible hero prop/props.
1. an alchemy table which would be its main work station.
2. a teleporting device which he would use to teleport to other planets or solar systems to collect rare ingredients.
3. a ray gun type device that it is in the middle of building for a particular reason.
4. a seeing orb that it uses to view other planets and life forms.
5. Its wrecked spaceship if he were to be situated on Mars.
6. It's human disguise hanging up (it was hard to show this in the Influnce Map)

Cinematic Spaces: Influence Maps v2

I decided to redo my three definitive Influence Maps because my ideas changed a lot after my OGR.

Cinematic Spaces: Influence Maps

Using my highlighted areas of description in my excerpts I put together 3 Influence Maps. Each one corresponds to a single concept and a specific chapter in my excerpts.
